Quick examples

HOW NETHER COORDINATES WORK

Minecraft uses an 8:1 horizontal coordinate ratio between the Overworld and Nether. One block traveled in the Nether corresponds to eight blocks in the Overworld on the X and Z axes.

Overworld → Nether

X ÷ 8 · Z ÷ 8

Nether → Overworld

X × 8 · Z × 8

The calculator shows both the exact mathematical result and a nearest-block result for practical portal placement. Negative coordinates work normally.

COMMON QUESTIONS

How do I convert Overworld coordinates to Nether coordinates?

Divide the Overworld X coordinate by 8 and divide the Overworld Z coordinate by 8. For example, X 800 and Z -1600 becomes X 100 and Z -200 in the Nether.

How do I convert Nether coordinates back to the Overworld?

Multiply Nether X by 8 and multiply Nether Z by 8. The calculator can switch direction instantly with the Swap button.

Do I divide the Y coordinate by 8?

No. The 8:1 coordinate conversion applies to the horizontal X and Z axes. Y is not scaled. When several portals are close together, vertical placement can still influence portal linking.

Why did my portal link to a different portal?

Converted X/Z coordinates are the correct starting point, but Minecraft can link to another nearby portal. Moving portals closer to the matching converted coordinates and considering vertical distance can help separate portal pairs.
