How to Defeat the Ender Dragon in Minecraft (2026 Guide)

The Ender Dragon fight is the moment every Survival world builds toward, and it punishes anyone who shows up without a plan. You get one shot at the crystals, no do-overs on your inventory once you're inside, and a boss that can knock you into the void from full health if you're standing in the wrong spot.

The short version: gear up in enchanted armor and a strong weapon set, find a Stronghold and light the End Portal, destroy every End Crystal before you touch the dragon's health bar, then wear it down with ranged shots while it flies and sword hits while it perches on the portal. Everything below fills in the parts that actually matter, the parts that separate a clean five-minute kill from a frustrating death spiral.

What You Need Before Fighting the Ender Dragon

Best gear and items for the Ender Dragon fight

Once you jump through the End Portal, there's no walking back out until the dragon is dead or you die. Pack like it.

    Essential items:

    • Full set of armor, ideally diamond or netherite

    • A Sword (diamond or netherite)

    • A bow with arrows, or a crossbow

    • A pickaxe (you may spawn underground)

    • At least a stack of Food

    • A water bucket

    • A stack or two of building blocks

    • Potions of Slow Falling or a water bucket for fall damage

    • A handful of Golden Apples

    • Empty glass bottles

    Recommended extras:

    • Splash Potions of Healing and Strength

    • Ender pearls (though you can farm these once you're in the End)

    • A carved pumpkin, to avoid provoking Endermen while you get set up

    • A totem of undying, if you have one spare

    • A Shield

    • TNT and a way to light it, for caged crystals

The water bucket matters more than people expect. It puts out lava in the stronghold, softens fall damage, and can flush an angry Enderman away from you in the End without you having to fight it. The Slow Falling potion does something similar for the dragon's knockback, which can throw you high enough into the air that regular fall damage would kill you on landing.

Best Armor and Enchantments for the Ender Dragon

Best armor enchantments for fighting the Ender Dragon

Diamond armor gets you through the fight fine. Netherite is better mainly because of its built-in knockback resistance, which takes some of the sting out of the dragon's charge attacks and stops you getting flung off the island as easily.

Feather Falling is the one people skip and regret. Fall damage from getting knocked off the towers or off the main island is one of the top ways players die in the End, and it's completely avoidable with either the enchantment or a Slow Falling potion in your hotbar.

Best Weapons for the Ender Dragon

You'll actually use two weapons in this fight, not one.

Bow. This is your main tool for popping End Crystals and for hitting the dragon while it's circling overhead. Power increases your damage output, and Infinity means you never run out of arrows as long as you're carrying at least one. Bring two or three stacks of arrows if you can't get Infinity yet.

Crossbow. A solid alternative if you'd rather not manage a bow's charge timing. It hits harder per shot and has better range, but it can't take Infinity or Power, so you will burn through arrows faster. Piercing lets a single bolt punch through multiple crystals in a line, and Multishot is genuinely useful for hitting the dragon while it's circling far overhead, somewhere a normal bow shot would just miss.

Sword. You need this for the perch phase, when the dragon lands on the portal and becomes immune to arrows. Sharpness boosts your damage against both the dragon and any Endermen you run into. Knockback does nothing to the dragon, but it's handy for shoving Endermen away from you.

Axe. Skip it. It technically hits harder per swing in Java Edition, but the slower attack cooldown makes it a worse pick than the sword for a fight this fast-paced.

Best Potions for the Ender Dragon Fight

Potions aren't optional flavor here, they're closer to essential gear.

    • Slow Falling. Negates the fall damage from the dragon's knockback. This is the single most important potion in the fight, right after healing.

    • Strength. Boosts your melee damage during the perch phase, when every swing counts.

    • Healing / Regeneration. Splash versions work faster than drinking, since you skip the animation delay when you're mid-fight and taking hits.

    • Night Vision. Optional. The End is dim, but End Stone's pale color already stands out clearly against the dark sky and the dragon, so most experienced players skip this one.

    • Swiftness or Leaping. Nice for repositioning quickly, not essential.

One thing worth knowing: the dragon is immune to nearly every status effect, including anything you'd try to apply with tipped arrows. Java players in particular have no way to poison, weaken, or slow the dragon itself. The only exception is Instant Damage delivered through a splash or lingering Potion of Harming that a player throws, which actually hurts the dragon.

How to Find the Stronghold and Activate the End Portal

Activated End Portal in a Minecraft stronghold

    1. Get Eyes of Ender. Combine an ender pearl with blaze powder. You'll want more than the 12 needed to fill the portal frame, since eyes have a chance to shatter when thrown. Fifteen to twenty is a safe number.

    2. Throw an eye and follow it. It floats in the direction of the nearest Stronghold, then drops. Travel a good distance before throwing another one so you're not wasting eyes on tiny course corrections.

    3. Watch for the eye sinking downward. That means you're above the stronghold. Start digging.

    4. Navigate the stronghold carefully. Doors that sit flush with the wall lead away from the entrance staircase; doors carved into the wall lead back toward it. If you hear silverfish or lava, the portal room is close.

    5. Fill the portal frame. Some frames already hold an eye from world generation. Fill the rest and the portal activates with a roar that makes it very clear what's about to happen.

Before you jump in, deal with the silverfish spawner in the portal room, and consider turning the nearby lava into obsidian so a silverfish can't knock you into it. Also set a bed or respawn point nearby in the Overworld. If you die in the End, you'll want a fast way back to try again.

How to Defeat the Ender Dragon: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Enter the End Carefully

You land on a small obsidian platform, usually at the center of the island. The dragon spawns about a second after you arrive and is immediately active, so don't stand around admiring the scenery. Get your bearings, check whether Endermen are nearby, and move toward solid ground without sprinting blindly, since a careless dash toward the void has ended more than a few dragon attempts before they even started.

If you're on Java Edition, pressing F3+B shows hitboxes for both Endermen and the dragon. It's a small trick, but it makes a real difference in a dimension this dark, especially for telling an Enderman apart from the background before you accidentally lock eyes with it.

Step 2: Destroy the End Crystals

How to destroy End Crystals in Minecraft

This is the part that decides whether the fight takes five minutes or twenty five. Ten obsidian towers ring the island, each holding an End Crystal. As long as even one crystal survives, it can heal the dragon indefinitely, meaning you could land hit after hit and never see the health bar move.

Crystals on shorter towers are easy: shoot them from the ground with your bow. Taller towers, and any towers with Iron bar cages around the crystal, take more work. For caged crystals, either climb up with blocks (bring extra, since mining End Stone is slow) or throw an ender pearl to land beside the cage, then break in with your pickaxe. TNT placed on top of a cage and lit from a distance also works, and it skips the climbing entirely.

How to destroy a caged End Crystal

Destroying a crystal while its healing beam is actively connected to the dragon deals a burst of extra damage on top of removing the healing source, so don't be shy about shooting a crystal even if the dragon happens to be near it at the time.

Climbing towers while the dragon is still actively circling is genuinely dangerous. Its hitbox is bigger than it looks, and it can knock you off mid-climb even when you don't feel like you're close to it. Wait for a moment when the dragon is perched or on the far side of the island before you commit to a climb.

    Step 3: Avoid Enderman Aggro

Endermen in the End are just as easy to provoke as anywhere else, but here you're also managing a dragon fight at the same time, which makes a swarm of angry Endermen a lot more dangerous than usual.

Wear a carved pumpkin while you're setting up your position early on, since it blocks the eye contact that triggers aggression. Once you take the pumpkin off to fight properly, keep your crosshair low and be conscious of where you're aiming when scanning for the dragon. If one does turn hostile, a splash of water or a quick retreat behind a block usually breaks the chase, since Endermen can't follow through water.

Step 4: Attack the Dragon While It Flies

Attacking the Ender Dragon with a bow

With the crystals gone, switch fully to your bow or crossbow. The dragon moves fast and its flight path curves, so aim slightly ahead of where it's heading rather than where it currently is. Try to land shots on the head specifically. As of the 26.3 update, hits to the dragon's head deal noticeably more damage again on Java Edition, after years of a bug that made head shots no better than hitting the wings. That's a real change worth knowing if you learned this fight on an older version.

Stay near the center of the island so you're not caught off guard by a charge attack while you're focused on aiming. The dragon telegraphs its dives, but only if you're watching for them.

Step 5: Attack the Dragon When It Perches

Every so often, the dragon lands on top of the exit portal structure. This is your best window for melee damage, since your sword hits land far more reliably than trying to snipe a moving target. The dragon is immune to arrows while perched (they bounce off and catch fire), so don't waste ammo here.

Approach from the side, land your hits, and back off before it winds up its breath attack, which it uses after roaring for about a second and a quarter. The breath deals damage over time and counts as magic damage, so Armor enchantments won't reduce it. If you took a hit and you're low, retreat behind a pillar and eat a Golden Apple rather than pushing for one more swing.

Don't stand directly underneath the dragon during this phase. Its wings deal solid damage on their own, on top of the knockback that can send you flying if you're standing too close when it shifts position.

Step 6: Survive the Dragon's Attacks

How Long Does It Take to Kill the Ender Dragon?

There's no fixed number here, and any guide promising one is guessing. A well-geared player who's fought the dragon before can often finish it in under five minutes. A first-timer with diamond gear and decent aim might take fifteen to twenty five. The biggest factors are how quickly you clear the crystals, how comfortable you are landing bow shots on a moving target, and whether you're playing on Easy, Normal, or Hard, since damage output and incoming damage both scale with difficulty.

Common Mistakes That Get Players Killed

    • Entering without a bow. You cannot destroy crystals or damage the flying dragon efficiently without one.

    • Ignoring crystals to rush the dragon. The fight becomes unwinnable if the dragon keeps healing faster than you can damage it.

    • Looking directly at Endermen while scanning the area. Keep your aim low when you're not actively fighting one.

    • Bringing weak food. Bread and rotten flesh won't cut it. Bring Golden Apples or a full stack of something with real saturation.

    • Climbing towers mid-fight without a plan. Wait for the dragon to be occupied elsewhere first.

    • Standing near the edge of the island out of habit. The void doesn't care how confident you feel.

    • Forgetting Slow Falling. This single miss causes more unnecessary deaths than almost anything else in this fight.

    • Panicking and running out of arrows early. Save some ammo for the actual dragon fight, not just crystal-popping.

Can You Defeat the Ender Dragon Without...

Without enchanted gear? Yes, though it's slower and riskier. Plain diamond armor and a diamond sword can absolutely get the job done if your aim is good and you play patiently.

Without Netherite? Also yes. Netherite helps with knockback resistance, but it's a quality-of-life upgrade, not a requirement.

Without potions? Possible, but harder. Slow Falling in particular is doing a lot of work protecting you from fall damage, and going without it means relying entirely on careful positioning and Feather Falling boots.

Without a bow? Not recommended. You can destroy crystals with thrown snowballs, eggs, or ender pearls in a pinch, but attacking the flying dragon without any ranged option makes the fight drag on far longer than it needs to.

    Ender Dragon Rewards

Beating the dragon for the first time hands you three things at once: a huge burst of experience (enough to take a fresh character from level 0 to roughly level 68), a Dragon Egg that sits on top of the portal as a trophy, and an End Gateway that opens up the outer End islands, where End Cities, Shulkers, and the Elytra are waiting.

Respawning the dragon later and killing it again gives a smaller experience reward and, on Java Edition, no additional Dragon Egg. It does generate another End Gateway, up to a total of twenty across all your kills, and it's currently the only way to farm more Dragon's Breath for brewing.

What to Do After Defeating the Ender Dragon

For a lot of players, this is where the game actually opens up rather than winds down. The End Gateway drops you near the outer islands, where End Cities hold Shulkers guarding some of the best loot in the game, including Shulker Boxes and, eventually, an Elytra. Once you've got wings on your back, exploring the outer End (and honestly, the rest of the world) changes completely.

How to Respawn the Ender Dragon

Place four End Crystals, one on each side of the exit portal. It doesn't matter exactly how they're arranged as long as one sits on each edge. Once placed, they trigger a beam sequence that resets the towers and cages, then the dragon spawns again near the center of the island. The whole sequence takes a bit over thirty seconds.

If any of the four crystals gets destroyed mid-sequence, the whole respawn cancels, so make sure the area is clear before you commit. People respawn the dragon for the smaller but repeatable XP payout, for more Dragon's Breath, or simply because they want another End Gateway for easier travel to the outer islands.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Destroy every End Crystal first, then alternate between bow shots while the dragon flies and sword hits while it perches on the portal. Keep Slow Falling potions and Golden Apples on hand throughout.
Full diamond or netherite armor enchanted with Protection IV, with Feather Falling IV on your boots specifically to handle fall damage from knockback.
Protection IV and Feather Falling IV on armor, Sharpness on your sword, and Power or Infinity on your bow, depending on whether you need more damage or more ammo.
You need both. The bow handles crystals and the flying dragon, while the sword is your only real option once the dragon lands and becomes immune to arrows.
Yes. It's one of the most important items in the fight, since it removes fall damage entirely from the dragon's knockback attacks.
Shoot short towers from the ground. For caged crystals on tall towers, climb with blocks or an ender pearl, or use TNT to skip the climb entirely.
